Fragment

Katrina Tyler developed this design for an entry statement at the Darwin Convention Centre. Fifty identical cast aluminium pieces form a fragmented pattern that seems to emerge from the concrete forecourt into a graceful shelter.

Inspired by the beauty of impermanence, fragmentation and decay, the artist translated principles from her sculptural jewellery practice to conceive this large-scale spherical work. Appropriate to the coastal location, the artwork reflects the emergence, erosion and evolution of coral forms. The artwork can represent a coral form that is decaying after being washed up on the shore or regenerating within an urban environment.
