This large-scale screen artwork transforms the multi-storey car park into a visual statement greeting visitors at the entrance to the Darwin Waterfront. It was designed by Mandy Ridley as a response to the artist’s experience of visiting Darwin and encountering an extraordinary range of stimuli; the physical environment and the rich social and cultural make-up of the city and populations.

Objects from both the South East Asian and maritime collections of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory are referenced to create an artwork that explores the diverse influences that have come together to create contemporary Darwin culture. Grand organic lines referencing the nearby ocean are overlaid across a dense screen of intricate pattern, representing the heritage of immigrants who have crossed it to make Darwin their home.

As well as providing an iconic artwork cladding, this solution addresses safety issues while maintaining ventilation requirements for the car park.
