Gapu Guya

The glass observation lifts located to the sea side of the hotel are a key opportunity for integration of a pattern-based artwork. The density and position of the pattern is designed to provide uninterrupted views to the ocean from the eastern elevation and a privacy screen to the north. Lift users have the sense of being surrounded by the artwork and its liquid movement across the glass surface.

Indigenous artist Wukun Wunambi developed this pattern, which concentrates on the connection between gapu (water) and guya (fish). The artwork has evolved from sacred saltwater designs that the artist learned from tribal elders 10 years after the death of his father, the original custodian.
