Local Law Firm Throws Challenge for Pollies to Pedal

Local law firm Darwin Family Law has challenged the 25 members of the NT Legislative Council to get on their bikes this Sunday for the 7th edition of the Territories largest cycling event, the Sunbuild Top End Gran Fondo.

Darwin Family Law will donate $1,000 to the charity of choice to any Member of Parliament who completes either the Sunbuild 150km Full Fondo or Darwin Family Law 75km Half Fondo.

“This is a serious challenge to any member of the NT Legislative Council.  The benefits are plenty, including raising vital funds for needy charities plus of course the health and wellbeing of our hard working Pollies.  How good would it be to see a few of our Pollies take up this challenge, get on their bike and pedal for charity,” Partner of Darwin Family Law Julian Barry said.

Mr Barry is himself an avid cyclist, lining up in the 150km ride on Sunday.

“I’m in my 50’s and find cycling a brilliant form of exercise.  We all work hard, but it’s important to retain a life balance of work and exercise.  To my surprise last year I managed to keep with the lead pack for much of the ride, it was such a thrill,” Mr Barry said.

Also a member of the management committee Mr Barry says that he’s also prepared to put his money where his bike is.  The event was taking entries all week, with online entries closing midnight Thursday or late entries taken at The Precinct at Darwin Waterfront between 10am-4pm on Saturday.

“Our firm sponsors the 75km Half Fondo, which is quite achievable for novice riders.  This year we’ve added a 25km Fun Fondo, which is ideal for people new to riding, but for the Pollies to make a difference for charity, I reckon they can ride their bike for a couple of hours at least,” Mr Barry laughed.

The largest cycling event in the Northern Territory will see four events on offer this Sunday 19th August, including;
