Mauboy to headline Queen’s Baton Relay Celebrations in Darwin

14 February 2018

Jessica Mauboy will be the headline act for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) shared celebration at the Darwin Waterfront on Friday 2 March 2018.

Mauboy will join other Territory artists including Caiti Baker, Natalie Pellegrino and Melanie Grey in the free community celebrations to mark the end of the Territory’s part of the QBR as it makes its way to the GC2018 Opening Ceremony in the Gold Coast.

Minister for Tourism and Culture, Lauren Moss, said she was delighted with the uptake and participation of the diverse local Territory champions, from the bush to the city and all walks of life, who have been selected to carry the baton in Uluru, Alice Springs, Litchfield, Palmerston and finally to Darwin where the highlight celebration will take place at the Waterfront.

“The event puts Darwin in the national and international spotlight and is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our Territory talent and culture.”

“The Baton Relay throughout the Territory is a great way for Territorians to celebrate the 2018 Commonwealth Games while recognising the achievements of our own local heroes.”

Jessica Mauboy was born and raised in Darwin, where she grew up in a multicultural family – her father Ferdi is of Indonesian descent and her mother Therese is an Indigenous Australian.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to come home and perform for this exceptional celebration of sport, people and cultures,” Territory singer-songwriter, Jessica Mauboy said.

“The Territory is a truly unique place, our multiculturalism, community spirit and pride is second to none. I can’t wait to share this once-in-a-lifetime experience with my friends and family in my hometown.”

The event will kick off early from 4pm with free children’s entertainment including GC2018 mascot Borobi performing on stage and roving entertainment including a circus show, giant bubbles, balloon twisting and face glitters.

The Queen’s Baton will arrive at 4.30pm until 5pm, with live music and entertainment to follow until 9pm.

The night will end with the Australian Bruno Mars Show tribute show and a spectacular fireworks finale at 8.45pm.

The event has been delivered in conjunction with City of Darwin and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC).

“I invite everyone to join in this wonderful community event. I’d also love to see people get out on the streets and show support for the relay runners as they carry the baton through Darwin to the Waterfront,” Lord Mayor City of Darwin, Kon Vatskalis said
