Recreation Lagoon still a great place for a family swim
Mr Coleman, CEO, Darwin Waterfront Corporation said a recent site investigation by environmental consultants URS verified the sand discolouration at the Darwin Waterfront Recreation Lagoon was a result of natural conditions.
Report authors URS Darwin said the grey colours in the sand were associated with the depth to anoxic conditions and indicate a chemical reduction of iron which produces the yellow to red colours seen in beach sand.
The slight odour is associated with reduced forms of sulphur.
Mr Coleman said despite recent concerns by some members of the public the Recreation Lagoon continues to be a clean, protected and safe place to take the family for a swim.
“It’s the only beach in Darwin City that has lifeguards on patrol seven days a week,” he said.
Mr Coleman said the Corporation has an open door and encourages members of the public to call 8999 5155 or complete a feedback form at http://www.waterfront.nt.gov.au/to raise any issues they may have.
URS Darwin has taken extensive samples which have been sent to a NATA registered laboratory to confirm their view that there are no harmful substances present.
