Cassiopeia jellyfish present in the Darwin Waterfront Recreation Lagoon
The Darwin Waterfront Corporation advises the general public that Cassiopeia jellyfish are present in the Darwin Waterfront Recreation Lagoon and the Corporation’s management plan to remove them has been instigated.
Cassiopeia is known as a nuisance jellyfish and is not considered to be dangerous.
So, far the jellyfish have only been found at the end nearest the Darwin Convention Centre.
The swimming area between the flags is being constantly monitored and is considered to be safe with drag netting every two hours finding no jellyfish present.
If people wish to swim outside the flags it is recommended they wear protective clothing.
If a person comes in contact with a Cassiopeia, skin irritation may occur and people are advised to rinse with salt water and apply ice if pain persists.
Lifeguards who are qualified in first aid patrol the lagoon waters seven days a week between 9am-6pm.
The chlorinated Wave Lagoon is completely separate from the Recreation Lagoon and is not affected by the Cassiopeia jellyfish.
