Surf’s Up at the Wave Lagoon
The Darwin Waterfront precinct and Wave Lagoon were officially opened today, with a lucky group of competition winners testing the waves in the Lagoon.
Chief Minister Paul Henderson said the Waterfront precinct would be a magnificent recreation area for Territorians and visitors alike.
“The wave lagoon and waterfront precinct will be an exciting destination for Territorians, a great attraction for visitors and provide a tremendous boost for our tourism industry,” Mr Henderson said.
“Construction at the waterfront created hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars of economic activity – and economic activity and jobs will continue to be generated through this precinct.
“The Lagoon and surrounds will be a safe and friendly area for families to enjoy and adds to this Government’s investment in the Leanyer Recreation Park, the Alice Springs Pool and the promised Palmerston Water Park.
“The transformation of what was once an industrial wasteland into this magnificent precinct of landscaped gardens, parklands, water recreation areas and promenades, as well as hotels, restaurants and a first class convention centre, has been remarkable.”
“My congratulations to all those involved in this waterfront project – and the competition winners and I hope they’ve enjoyed the day.”
The wave lagoon will be open to the public from tomorrow and will cost $8 for adults for a full day, and $16 for a family.
Mr Henderson said the Northern Territory Government was a proud supporter of the wave lagoon and the entire precinct – contributing some $150 million to the overall project.
“We believe this has been a fantastic investment for the Territory, which will have its value returned many times over for Territorians.
“For example, at the Convention Centre we have already seen dozens of events attracting tens of thousands of delegates to this area and millions of dollars in economic activity.
“The new area also offers an exciting link between the waterfront and Darwin city, and a fantastic new hub for our important cruise ship industry.”
